Creating Safe Spaces in Sand Tray Play Therapy with Internal Family Systems
When an individual experiences trauma, they turn to safe spaces for acknowledgment and support. Individuals are at risk of developing beliefs about themselves, others, and various spaces that impact how they show up in the world. This workshop will explore how to address traumatized parts by externalization within the sand tray.
Objectives:
- Participants will explain concepts of the Internal Family Systems model and the relationship with sandtray therapy.
- Participants will demonstrate sandtray techniques utilizing Internal Family Systems.
- Participants will discuss trauma and its impact on the internal system.
Carmen Jimenez-Pride is the founder, and Executive Director of Outspoken Counseling and Consulting. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, Certified EMDR Therapist, Internal Family Systems Therapist, Registered Yoga Teacher, Registered Children Yoga Teacher and a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator. Carmen is also a LEGO® Serious Play® Facilitator.
Carmen is the developer of Diversity in Play Therapy Inc.; and creator/organizer of the Diversity in Play Therapy Summit.
Carmen received her Bachelor of Social Work with a certificate in Child Protective Services from Benedict College. She was then accepted into the advanced standing program at the University of South Carolina earning a Master of Social Work with a focus on communities and organizations. Carmen’s passion is youth/ children, and she has dedicated herself not only to enriching the lives of children, but also providing the tools and curriculum for clinicians to ensure her goal to reach others has an even farther span in society.
Carmen is experienced in clinical treatment of children, adolescents and adults with culturally diverse backgrounds addressing a wide range of concerns. Carmen’s career in the mental health field spans more than 15 years.
Her experience as a therapist, consultant, trainer, educator, coach and author encompass Carmen’s approach to practice, which is “Together We Will Grow”

Early Recollections in Sandtray Play Therapy
In this fun, experiential workshop, you will learn how to facilitate clients’ exploration of their early memories using sand tray play therapy. You will be able to use this process to help clients gain insight into their strengths and creative abilities, increase their understanding of the strategies they use to find belonging and significance and discover the unconscious social contracts they might have with others.
Objectives:
After this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Describe how to use sand tray play therapy with clients’ early recollections to help them explore their strengths and creative abilities.
- Explain how to use sand tray play therapy with clients’ early recollections to help them gain insight into the strategies they use to gain significance and a sense of belonging.
- Describe the process of using sand tray play therapy with clients’ early recollections to help them discover the unconscious social contracts they have in their relationships with other people.
Terry Kottman developed Adlerian play therapy, an approach to working with children, families, and adults that combines the ideas and techniques of Individual Psychology and play therapy. She recently founded the League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists, a play therapy training center, and created a certification in Adlerian play therapy. Terry is a fun and engaging presenter and author who regularly teaches classes and writes about play therapy. She is co-author (with Kristin Meany-Walen) of Doing Play Therapy: From Building the Relationship to Facilitating Change and Partners in Play: An Adlerian Approach to Play Therapy, and the author of Play Therapy: Basics and Beyond and several other books. In 2014, she was granted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Play Therapy; in 2017, she was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Iowa Association for Play Therapy; and in 2020, she received a third Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Society for Adlerian Psychology. (She seems to be collecting them.) She has been married to her husband Rick and has a delightful son, Jacob, of whom she is inordinately proud.

Who am I?: Strengthening Sense of Self in Sandtray Play Therapy
Discover how to help your clients get clear on who they are and what matters to them through explorations of their authentic self in Sandtray Therapy. Clients often come to us with self-critical beliefs that leave them feeling beatdown and stuck, unaware of their inner resources and what really matters to them. Inconsistencies in how one lives life compared to their set of values is often at the root of suffering. Through applications of the Oaklander Model (Gestalt therapy with children) you'll experientially learn how to strengthen your clients sense of self through use projection, self-compassion, and reflection in Sandtray Therapy to enhance your clients' fulfillment in life through congruence.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to demonstrate how to use projective techniques in sandtray therapy to support clients awareness and expression of self.
- Participants will be able to describe how to strengthen clients self-compassion and reflection through Sandtray Therapy directives.
Jackie Flynn, EdS, LMHC-S, RPT is a Registered Play Therapist, Certified EMDR therapist and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Approved Provider for the Association for Play Therapy, EMDRIA Approved Advanced trainer, as well as an Education Consultant supporting school systems with professional development training for teachers and administrators, an author, as well as an internationally known speaker. Jackie has deep love and respect for Sandtray Therapy, as it is at the foundation of her practice in in-person and telehealth sessions. Also, Play Therapy applications of the Polyvagal Theory is at the heart of her work with a foundational focus on SAFETY and CONNECTION. Jackie earned a certification from ILS, Integrated Listening Systems, to provide the Safe and Sound Protocol, or SSP, a non-invasive application of Polyvagal Theory to individuals of all ages to help them heal through an intervention involving listening to therapeutically modified music in support of regulation of the autonomic nervous system. While Jackie is known best for her work with children, teens and families, she also works with individuals of all ages integrating PLAY Therapy at every opportunity. Driven by her desire to greatly reduce the amount of suffering in the world, she takes pride in her experiential trainings, consultations, and development of clinical resources for child therapists. Her expertise in Telehealth has allowed her to help clinicians from all over the world deliver the healing power of Play and EMDR therapies to people of all ages virtually.
